Cortland is a real estate investment and management firm seeking a strategic, process-driven Director of Payroll for a remote contract engagement. This role focuses on optimizing multi-state systems, driving automation, and ensuring regulatory compliance across a large corporate and hourly workforce.



About the Role



This position is for a Director of Payroll (Contract) that is 100% Remote (US-Based) in the Real Estate / Property Management industry.



Responsibilities



  • Process Optimization: Streamline end-to-end payroll workflows to enhance accuracy and operational efficiency.
  • Multi-State Compliance: Oversee complex, multi-state payroll tax filings and local/federal regulatory reporting.
  • Team Leadership: Provide strategic guidance to the internal payroll team and ensure seamless execution.
  • Vendor & HRIS Management: Manage relationships with external payroll vendors and enterprise software platforms (e.g., ADP, Workday, UKG).
  • Audit & Control: Direct month-end and year-end reconciliations and act as the primary point of contact for audits.



Qualifications



  • Experience: 8 or more years of payroll experience, with at least 3 years at a Director or senior leadership level.
  • Industry Background: Prior experience in property management, real estate, hospitality, or retail managing a large multi-site workforce.
  • Technical Skills: Advanced proficiency with major enterprise HRIS and payroll platforms.
