About This Opportunity
Huntwise is a feature-dense app — maps, predictive intelligence, property data, weather tools, group coordination. Making that complexity feel approachable to a first-season hunter learning the ropes, and an essential power tool to seasoned pros who know every feature and want more, is one of the core design challenges of this role. Users are navigating intricate interfaces in genuinely difficult conditions: low light, cold weather, gloves on, no cell signal, fully focused on something else. Getting that right takes real craft.
As the solo designer embedded in the Huntwise squad, you'll own the experience across both mobile and desktop — the mobile app built for in-field use, and a desktop app for planning where hunters do their pre-season scouting. You'll design across the full feature set: maps and layers, onboarding, navigation, predictive tools, and the design system that holds it all together. You'll work directly with engineers and a Product Manager to take features from concept to shipped, quickly and with high craft.
You don't need to be a hunter, but you need to respect the sport and understand the people who practice it. These are outdoorsmen and women who hunt to fill their freezer, connect with the land, and get closer to their food source. They take it seriously, they plan meticulously, and they're counting on this app to work when it matters most.
You must reside in one of these US states: AZ, CO, FL, GA, IL, IN, KY, MA, MD, MI, MN, NC, NV, OR, PA, RI, TX, VA, VT, WI, or one of these provinces in Canada: Ontario
What You'll Do
- Lead design for the Huntwise iOS and Android apps, including map and GIS-based interfaces, property tools, weather features, and hunt planning surfaces
- Own the end-to-end design process: research, wireframes, high-fidelity prototypes, usability testing, and production handoff
- Design intuitive map and location-based experiences — including property overlays, trail features, pins, layers, and contextual toolbars — for users in the field on mobile devices
- Build and evolve a mobile design system that enables developers and PMs to ship consistent, high-quality UI faster, with an eye toward AI-assisted tooling
- Partner directly with engineers throughout the build process, staying engaged beyond handoff to ensure quality
- Use user research and in-app data to continuously improve the experience — especially for core workflows like scouting, trip planning, and property lookup
- Advocate for the user in product discussions, especially users who may be accessing the app in low-connectivity field conditions

- 5+ years of product design experience, with strong mobile app design in your portfolio — ideally iOS and Android
- Experience designing map or GIS-based interfaces: think trail apps, navigation tools, property maps, outdoor activity platforms, or similar
- Deep familiarity with mobile interaction patterns and platform conventions for iOS and Android
- Strong Figma skills, including mobile component libraries and design system development
- An AI-forward mindset — actively using and exploring AI tools to accelerate design workflows, prototype creation, and design system leverage
- Ability to think in systems: you understand how individual UI decisions compound across a product
- Comfort working as the solo designer on a squad: you can hold the vision and execute it without a large design team around you
- A bachelor's degree in design, HCI, visual communication, or a related field is preferred, but portfolio and experience speak louder
- You've designed for low-connectivity or offline-first mobile experiences
- You have hands-on experience with mapping tools or data (Mapbox, ArcGIS, satellite imagery layers)
- You've worked on apps in the hunting, fishing, hiking, or outdoor recreation space
- You understand land ownership data, public/private land distinctions, or wildlife management unit systems
- A genuine passion for hunting, fishing, or other outdoor sporting activities — this is a differentiator, not a nice-to-have

- Field Craft & Contextual Design — Designs for real-world conditions: gloved hands, low light, no signal, full attention elsewhere. Builds interfaces that work when it matters most, not just in the ideal case.
- Map & Systems Thinking — Translates complex GIS data, property layers, and location-based tools into intuitive, navigable experiences. Understands how individual UI decisions compound across a feature-dense product.
- Mobile Platform Fluency — Applies deep knowledge of iOS and Android interaction patterns to ship consistent, high-quality UI that feels native on both platforms.
- Design System Ownership — Builds and maintains component libraries and design systems that enable engineers and PMs to move faster without sacrificing quality.
- User Advocacy — Brings the field user into every product conversation, especially when technical or business priorities risk losing sight of how the app is actually used.
