Job Description
The ideal candidate is a talented lead web programmer who wants to make a difference in the world by reducing the number of cars on the road, increasing the use of electric vehicles, or enabling an array of non petroleum-based fuels.
This position will support existing sites in our portfolio such as the Alternative Fuels Data Center (https://www.afdc.energy.gov), the NREL Developer Network (https://developer.nrel.gov), or the new Joint Office of Energy and Transportation Drive Electric website (https://driveelectric.gov/). Our current development platforms are based on a Ruby on Rails, JavaScript and PostgreSQL stack. As a backend developer, the candidate must be comfortable with Ruby on Rails and PostgreSQL, and have experience learning and applying new web technologies.
The selected candidate will help us innovate websites and applications, while maintaining existing assets including web content, APIs, and internal tools. This position is expected to collaborate with a team of developers, analysts, and project leads. Our team is passionate about both web and energy technologies, so the candidate must be comfortable not only programming, but participating in processes that involve meeting with project teams, clients, and end users.
Required Qualifications
- Passionate about mobility systems and reducing their impact on our planet
- Ruby on Rails including unit testing
- Familiarity with Docker, Git, AWS, and Linux command line
- Comfortable working with a variety of backend technologies
- Managing application development against PostgreSQL or another relational database
- Working collaboratively with colleagues on teams
- Capable of working directly with engineers, scientists, and analysts to translate their calculations from spreadsheet and paper calculations to the web
- Adaptable, able to work on multiple projects at the same time
- Approachable and willing to provide or find answers to questions from multiple sources
- Adept at identifying potential problems, blockers, and schedule issues; owning the resolution of these issues; and collaborating with internal teams and clients to find solutions
For Researcher IV level -This individual is expected to lead projects and scope work appropriately to junior members of staff.
For Researcher III level - This individual is expected to contribute as a solo contributor with minimal oversight.
Basic Qualifications
For Researcher IV
Relevant PhD and 4 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 7 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 9 or more years of experience .
For Researcher III
Relevant PhD . Or, relevant Master's Degree and 3 or more years of experience . Or, relevant Bachelor's Degree and 5 or more years of experience
- Must meet educational requirements prior to employment start date.
Additional Required Qualifications
- Candidates must have experience with Ruby on Rails.
- A degree is required for this position
Preferred Qualifications
Our team utilizes a variety of technologies, and the preferred candidate would demonstrate experience in a significant subset of the skills below:
- Backend Technologies including
- PostgreSQL
- RESTful API building experience
- SQL
- Authentication and roles implementation
- PostGIS
- A preferred candidate would also have some familiarity working with frontend technologies including
- jQuery
- JavaScript frameworks such as Vue, Ember, Backbone, or others
- Data visualization such as Highcharts and D3
- Mapbox GL JS/MapLibre or Leaflet
Candidates at Level III should possess some of the preferred qualifications with limited proficiency. Those at Level IV should cover more of these qualifications and bring a deeper level of knowledge and skill.

Annual Salary Range (based on full-time 40 hours per week)
Job Profile: Researcher IV / Annual Salary Range: $95,500 - $171,900
Job Profile: Researcher III / Annual Salary Range: $79,600 - $143,300
NREL takes into consideration a candidate’s education, training, and experience, expected quality and quantity of work, required travel (if any), external market and internal value, including seniority and merit systems, and internal pay alignment when determining the salary level for potential new employees. In compliance with the Colorado Equal Pay for Equal Work Act, a potential new employee’s salary history will not be used in compensation decisions.
