About The Role

The Data Engineer will be a pivotal member of the team, responsible for designing, developing, and maintaining robust data infrastructure to support public health initiatives. This position is aligned with the Workforce Acceleration Initiative (WAI), a federally funded program aimed at enhancing data capabilities within public health agencies. Working within the Chickasaw Nation Department of Health (CNDH), the Data Engineer will collaborate closely with cross-functional teams—including data scientists, analysts, IT staff, and content experts—to create scalable, secure, and efficient data pipelines and storage solutions. The role involves managing data ingestion, transformation, and storage processes, optimizing workflows for performance, and ensuring data security and compliance. The position offers the flexibility of a fully remote work arrangement for U.S.-based candidates and may involve up to 10% domestic travel. The Data Engineer will also provide mentorship and technical guidance to team members, fostering capacity development and sustainable data practices that align with organizational goals.

Qualifications

• Bachelor's degree in Computer Science, Information Technology, Data Science, or a related field
• Minimum of 5 years of relevant professional experience in data engineering or related roles
• Proficiency in programming languages such as Python, R, Java, Scala, and SQL
• Experience with big data technologies including Hadoop, Spark, Kafka, and Flink
• Strong understanding of relational databases (MySQL, PostgreSQL) and NoSQL databases (MongoDB, Cassandra)
• Experience working with large datasets and health record systems like Epic
• Proficiency with data visualization tools such as Power BI
• Knowledge of data warehousing concepts and tools
• Experience with cloud computing platforms (AWS, Azure, GCP)
• Expertise in data modeling, ETL processes, and data integration techniques
• Familiarity with agile methodologies, software design patterns, and best practices
• Excellent analytical, problem-solving, and communication skills
• Ability to work effectively in virtual teams and remote environments
• Experience working with tribal nations and understanding of tribal data sovereignty (preferred)
• Proficiency in Microsoft Office suite
  
  

Responsibilities

• Create, develop, and manage data pipelines and systems to facilitate efficient data ingestion, processing, and storage
• Collect data from diverse sources, perform transformation and cleaning to ensure accuracy and consistency, and load data into storage solutions
• Optimize data workflows and infrastructure for scalability, performance, and reliability
• Monitor data systems for issues, errors, and anomalies, and implement corrective actions as needed
• Implement security measures to safeguard sensitive health data and ensure compliance with relevant regulations
• Collaborate with data scientists, analysts, and other stakeholders to understand data requirements and develop tailored solutions
• Design and maintain data storage architectures, including relational and NoSQL databases, and data warehouses
• Develop and maintain ETL processes to ensure high-quality, consistent data delivery
• Stay updated on industry trends, emerging technologies, and best practices in data engineering, and integrate them into organizational workflows
• Provide technical guidance, mentorship, and training to team members to build organizational capacity
• Communicate effectively across teams and with external partners to gather requirements, share updates, and present findings
• Participate in project planning and coordinate with cross-functional teams to meet project objectives
• Support public health initiatives through innovative data solutions and infrastructure improvements
• Travel domestically up to 10% as required for meetings or project-related activities
