Java Software Engineer

Hybrid role (once per month on site to closest Nationwide hub- UK wide)

As a Software Engineer you will be working with project and application support teams building and maintaining a variety of platforms to provide secure, reliable business solutions. You will be involved at all stages from proof of concept, design, build and test through to live support. Ongoing training is important and the opportunity to increase or acquire new skills in the technologies used is encouraged.

At Nationwide we openly put our 15 million members at the centre of every decision we make as a business. Every role, no matter what it’s doing, is member focused. Engineering provides a key foundation for any of the systems being developed for internal or customer facing use.

This opportunity will sit in the Engineering Centre of Excellence and you will join a team of Engineers to share ideas and collaborate in the maintenance and building of platforms within our enterprise estate.

If we receive a high volume of relevant applications, we may close the advert earlier than the advertised date, so please apply as soon as you can.

What you’ll be doing

To build this new vision we are looking to recruit a new team of Engineers, who have proven experience in coding and DevOps, who are agile thinkers and ready to help us learn new technologies and architectures. For us, it’s not just about having the right technical background, you need to have an open mind, be able to work collaboratively and be driven to learn and succeed.

You’ll be at the frontline, delivering our vision to our members by designing, building, and testing systems used to process millions of transactions every day. You’ll be given the opportunity to work with the most up-to-date technologies to deliver real change.

You’ll make valuable contributions through developing solutions in a highly collaborative environment and implementing them with your team. With end-to-end ownership, development and deployment you’ll be given a platform to lead by example.

That’s our mindset and our culture: we want you to nurture and value proactive habits and to develop contacts and relationships, so things are done faster and more efficiently. We’ll expect you to get stuck in and have a go, knowing that sometimes to fail fast is to learn fast.

You may be required to work on-call on the rare occasion.

About you

We are looking for someone who has:

  • Significant programming experience, preferably in Java.
  • Significant experience of: Spring Boot or Kubernetes
  • Working in Agile and/or DevOps driven environments.
  • Experience of working with different architectures, such as Enterprise, cloud, N-Tier, Event Streaming or Microservices.
  • Experience of working with NoSQL databases such as MongoDB
  • The ability and mindset to quickly learn new and emerging technologies and apply them to create new solutions is essential.
  • Experience of Kafka is a plus, but if you have worked with similar technologies this is also fine. Our team use Kafka so you'll have the opportunity to be upskilled in this

We’re also interested in who you are as a person. Why? Because our membership is made up of so many different kinds of people, so we want our employees to be just as diverse. We’d love to hear about:

  • Your values, and what makes you who you are
  • How you’d make a difference to our members in this role

We know applying for jobs can sometimes feel like you’re sending an application into a black hole. We review each application individually. So, it’s a good idea to call out your most relevant experience on your application to give yourself the best chance.

The extras you’ll get

There are all sorts of employee benefits available at Nationwide, including:

  • A personal pension – if you put in 7% of your salary, we’ll top up by a further 16%
  • Up to 2 days of paid volunteering a year

  • A great selection of additional benefits through our salary sacrifice scheme
  • Access to an annual performance related bonus
  • Access to training to help you develop and progress your career
