About the Role
Seeking an experienced Senior Backstage Developer to play a pivotal role in building, customizing, and scaling Backstage (Spotify’s open-source Internal Developer Portal) for enterprise teams. This position focuses on centralizing software cataloging, improving developer experience, and enhancing workflow automation for large-scale technical environments. The role requires both strong engineering talent and collaborative ability to work seamlessly with platform, infrastructure, and security teams. A keen eye for detail and clear communication are essential in delivering impactful outcomes across the organization.
Key Responsibilities
Infrastructure Automation: Develop and maintain infrastructure-as-code to provision and manage cloud resources across multiple environments.
Backstage Development: Design, build, and extend Backstage plugins, integrations, and platform features tailored for enterprise-scale adoption.
Enterprise Integration: Architect solutions and connect Backstage to existing systems (CI/CD, observability, identity, cloud, and documentation platforms).
Developer Experience Enablement: Champion workflow automation, documentation, and self-service capabilities within Backstage to boost engineering productivity.
Customization and Security: Work with stakeholders to customize permissions, implement security and compliance requirements, and scale Backstage across multiple teams and regions.
Observability and Monitoring: Integrate Backstage with monitoring and analytics solutions to provide visibility into software and team performance.
Collaboration: Partner with engineering, SRE, infrastructure, and security teams to deliver enterprise-ready developer portal solutions.
Documentation: Develop clear and actionable documentation, onboarding guides, and plugin usage instructions for technical and non-technical audiences.
About You
Experience:
- 5+ years as a software/platform engineer in enterprise environments
- Hands-on experience developing, customizing, and maintaining Backstage in production settings
- Previous work integrating Backstage with CI/CD, cloud, monitoring, and identity tools (such as Jenkins, GitHub Actions, AWS, Datadog)
Technical Skills:
- Deep proficiency in TypeScript/JavaScript and React (Backstage tech stack)
- Strong hands-on experience with Node.js in production and plugin development contexts
- Familiarity with the Express framework is a nice to have
- Familiarity with cloud platforms (preferably AWS) and infrastructure-as-code (Terraform, Pulumi)
- Solid understanding of microservices, containerization (Docker), and orchestration (Kubernetes)
Mindset:
- Exceptional attention to detail and a passion for crafting reliable, user-friendly platforms
- Proactive ownership of complex problems with a preference for automation
- Comfortable in fast-paced, collaborative, and distributed teams
- Excellent verbal and written communication skills, able to explain technical concepts to diverse stakeholders
Nice to Have:
- Prior participation in Backstage open-source projects, contributions, or community engagement
- Experience implementing compliance/security controls in developer platforms
- Background in supporting multi-region/multi-cloud deployments.
