About The Role

The UX Designer role at Pontoon is a vital position within our Digital, Product, and Technology department, focusing on designing exceptional user experiences for a high-profile energy company client. This remote position offers the flexibility to work from anywhere, with occasional travel to Bristol or Plymouth for stakeholder meetings approximately once a month. The successful candidate will be responsible for translating complex business requirements into intuitive, engaging, and impactful digital interfaces across web and mobile platforms. Working within an Agile/Scrum environment, you will collaborate closely with product owners, UI designers, developers, and senior stakeholders to define, develop, and optimize user journeys that are both user-centric and aligned with business objectives.

This role requires a strategic thinker with proven experience in designing and improving large-scale user experiences. You will play a key part in shaping the end-to-end user journey, ensuring accessibility, usability, and visual consistency across all digital touchpoints. The position is ideal for someone with a background in large organizations who can confidently communicate ideas, present to senior leadership, and influence cross-functional teams to deliver innovative solutions.

Qualifications

The ideal candidate will possess a blend of technical expertise, creative talent, and excellent communication skills. Essential qualifications include proficiency with design tools such as Figma, Sketch, or Adobe XD, along with experience working alongside UI designers and front-end developers, particularly those using Angular. A strong understanding of HTML, CSS, and JavaScript principles is necessary to facilitate effective collaboration with development teams. Candidates should have a solid background in user research, usability testing, and data-driven UX optimization, with experience in designing complex user journeys within large organizations. Excellent presentation skills, problem-solving abilities, and the capacity to manage multiple projects in a fast-paced environment are critical for success.

Desirable qualifications include experience managing or contributing to design systems and component libraries, knowledge of WCAG 2.1 accessibility standards, familiarity with experimentation frameworks, and expertise in responsive and mobile-first design principles.

Responsibilities

• Design intuitive user interfaces and interactions for web and mobile applications that align with user needs and business goals.
• Conduct comprehensive user research, including persona development, journey mapping, and competitive analysis, to inform and validate design decisions.
• Create and optimize user journeys that simplify complex interactions, delivering measurable improvements in usability and user satisfaction.
• Develop wireframes, mockups, and interactive prototypes to illustrate design concepts and user flows clearly.
• Collaborate closely with UI designers and front-end developers (notably those working with Angular) to ensure technical feasibility and consistency in visual and interaction design.
• Participate actively in Agile/Scrum ceremonies such as daily stand-ups, sprint planning, and retrospectives to ensure alignment and timely delivery of design tasks.
• Advocate for end-users by ensuring accessibility and usability standards are embedded throughout the design and development process.
• Conduct usability testing and A/B experiments using tools like UserTesting, Hotjar, and Google Analytics to gather insights and refine user experiences.
• Present design concepts, rationales, and outcomes confidently to senior leadership and cross-functional teams to influence decision-making.
• Contribute to the development and maintenance of design systems and style guides to ensure consistency across all digital products.
• Work with the product owner to groom the backlog, prioritizing UX tasks based on user and business value to maximize impact and efficiency.
