The Role

As an EL1 Technical Lead Network Engineer, you will be responsible for the design, build and support of the Organisation’s IP based Wide Area Networks, Local Area Networks, firewalls and supporting ASD systems in a period of technological change.

EL1 Technical Lead Network Engineer

  • Undertake complex engineering and project work.
  • In-depth knowledge of and compliance with policy and legislative frameworks.
  • Translates and shapes strategies, policies and operational practices.
  • Possesses knowledge relating to the methodology, systems and procedures within the engineering management function.
  • Evaluates technical and design packages including scoping, planning, and reviewing implement actions.
  • Responsible for significant aspects of the installation, upgrade, operation, control and effective use of local and wide area networks for the communication of data, voice, audio, text or images.
  • Establish and lead network planning for own area of responsibility and designs the infrastructure necessary to provide the network services to meet service level agreements.
  • Maintain and apply detailed knowledge and experience related to the current ASD and industry accepted network hardware and software products.
  • Identify areas of risk and review the adequacy and effectiveness of ASD's approach to risk in the use of ICT and offer appropriate suggestions to address the risk.
  • Has expertise in change management and applies this to ensure the continuity of network operations and business functions during network installation or integration tasks.
  • Build and sustain relationships, liaise with a range of stakeholders including other teams, peers and colleagues across ASD and other organisations.
  • Motivate and mentor teams, aligning complementary skills and allocate resources in a manner that delivers results.
  • Evaluate projects to understand critical factors for success and engage in activities to achieve continuous improvement.
  • Analyse very complex network engineering issues, applying expertise to identify and recommend courses of action.

Our Ideal Candidate

An ideal candidate can demonstrate an ability to work collaboratively to achieve results and also has a willingness to learn and adapt to different network technologies.

  • Understand, build and manage routing and switching solutions including configuration, automation and monitoring.
  • Build, configure, and maintain network security solutions including firewalls, virtual appliances, VPNS, as well as cloud-native routing and switching technologies.
  • Install and manage physical hardware including, network routers, switches and compute servers.
  • Troubleshoot ICT infrastructure.
  • Cisco and/or Juniper firewall experience.
  • Exposure to and understanding of OSPF and BGP routing, as well as MPLS technologies.
  • Familiarity with ITIL processes and procedures.
  • Experience with Unix/Linux.
  • Experience with Optical Transport networks.
  • As part of the ASD’s technical leadership group, our ideal candidate will provide leadership, technical and planning skills, ensuring the overarching network architecture meets the business objectives and requirements.
