Senior System Engineer

An Australian R&D and manufacturing company developing advanced defence and industrial systems is expanding its engineering team and now hiring a Senior Systems Engineer to take ownership of system architecture, requirements, and integration across complex multidisciplinary programs.

In this role, you will serve as the system lead, responsible for deriving and decomposing high-level customer requirements, managing interface specifications, defining verification and validation (V&V) strategies, and overseeing system performance and integration activities throughout the full V-model lifecycle. The position requires strong systems thinking and the ability to work across mechanical, electrical, and embedded domains to deliver reliable, integrated solutions. This is a key role in a rapidly growing organisation where you will define the system engineering approach and help build out a high-performing team.

This is a full-time, on-site role based in Adelaide. Full relocation is required for interstate candidates; relocation allowance is provided.

Key Responsibilities:

• Lead system architecture development and requirements decomposition from customer-level specifications.
• Define system interfaces, manage configuration, and ensure traceability across subsystems.
• Own system integration activities and coordinate design verification and validation (V&V).
• Collaborate with mechanical, electrical, software, and test teams to deliver cohesive system solutions.
• Develop and maintain interface control documents (ICDs) and performance specifications.
• Oversee environmental, EMI/EMC, and mechanical integration considerations.
• Support design reviews, risk assessments, and trade studies.
• Provide technical leadership and mentorship to junior engineers.

Requirements:

• Degree in Mechatronics, Mechanical, Electrical, or Systems Engineering (or related discipline).
• Proven experience in systems engineering within defence, aerospace, marine, or automotive environments.
• Strong understanding of system lifecycle processes (requirements, architecture, integration, V&V).
• Familiarity with EMI/EMC, environmental qualification, and hardware integration.
• Experience working with multi-disciplinary teams delivering complex hardware systems.
• Excellent communication, documentation, and stakeholder management skills.
• Must be an Australian citizen with eligibility for defence security clearance.

Desirable but not essential:

• Exposure to embedded systems or control software development.
• Experience with requirements management tools (e.g., DOORS, Jama, or equivalent).
• Prior involvement in leadership or technical mentoring roles.
• Knowledge of defence standards and systems safety frameworks.
